'Other' option to multiple choice questions

In this article, we explain how to enable the 'Other' option on a multiple choice question in a survey, so employees can also fill in their own answer.

You can now add an 'Other' option to a multiple choice question in a survey. If none of the fixed answer options fit, the employee can type in their own answer instead of having to pick from the existing options.

This is especially useful for questions where you can't predict every possible answer in advance, such as open motivations, reasons or clarifications.

Adding the 'Other' option to your question

  1. Open the survey builder and add a multiple choice question, or open an existing multiple choice question.

  2. Fill in your fixed answer options under 'Options'.

  3. Turn on the 'Show "other" field' toggle.

  4. Save the question. The 'Other' option now automatically appears as an extra choice at the bottom of the list.

What this looks like for the employee

When an employee selects 'Other', a text field appears immediately where they can type their own answer. This keeps the question structured while still leaving room for a personal explanation.

Good to know

  • The 'Other' option is turned on or off per question, so you decide for yourself where it's useful.

  • It also works in combination with 'Multiple selection', so employees can combine several fixed options with their own answer.

  • Want to make an answer mandatory? Turn on 'Answer is required' as well.
